Surprising Things That Can Happen When You're Accused Of Driving Under The Influence

Arthur Young

Getting stopped by a police officer while driving can be scary. If you have been drinking or if you have any drugs in your system (including prescription drugs that warn against driving) it can be even scarier. While you have probably seen a DUI traffic stop on television, there are a lot of things that can happen that do not make it into a TV show. You can be pretty certain you will be cuffed and taken to the jail house or detention center; other than that, you may be very surprised at what occurs. The first thing you need to do is to call a DUI attorney for help. Here are just a few ways having a lawyer will make the whole situation easier.

Get Out of Jail

One of the first things your lawyer is going to do is to help you get out of jail. In most cases, there will be some type of bail that needs to be paid. The attorney will work with you, the court system, a bail bondsman, and your family to get you home as soon as possible.

Your Car and License

In some states, your car will be towed and impounded. It will be your responsibility to pay the towing and storage fees. A lawyer will find your car immediately and make sure it is picked up as soon as possible to keep the fees from getting too expensive. It is also possible for the police to take your license immediately. A lawyer will work with the court so that you are either given your license back or given a temporary license. The temporary license is usually given to allow you to continue to drive until you show up for court. If you are found guilty, you may lose your driving privileges for a while, but your attorney can fight that for you.

The Sentence

If you are found guilty after going to court, the judge will impose your sentence. A good DUI attorney may find a way to keep you from going to jail. You may be required to do some community service, register with a probation officer, attend Alcoholics (Narcotics) Anonymous or some other type of class and/or counseling, have your vehicle fitted with a device that will keep you from driving under the influence, or a combination of these. Trust your lawyer to get the best deal possible for you.

The penalties for driving under the influence can be steep. If someone else is injured or dies, you can be sure things are going to be even worse. If you are ever stopped and the officer asks you to perform any type of sobriety test, make sure you do what you are asked to do. However, as soon as possible, contact a lawyer. It is your best chance at staying out of jail.

About Me
unlawful employment termination - what's your next step?

Have you recently been let go from your job? Do you feel that the termination was illegal in any way? It is time for you to stand up to unfair employment practices by your former employer. An employment attorney helped me get through an impossible time more easily. I had no idea how serious the repercussions for terminating my position could be for the company, nor did I know how much the company would owe me for doing so. Thankfully, the attorney took the time to answer each and every question that I had and discussed all of my options. I have included much of what I learned on my website to help others learn what they could be owed if they were unlawfully terminated from their jobs.
